November Is Alcohol Abuse Awareness Month

Do you or someone you know have a problem with alcohol abuse? According to one survey, 40% of students engage in binge drinking. Binge drinking is the consumption of an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time. Typically, around five drinks for men or four for women over a two-hour period would be considered binge drinking.

Every year:

  • 1,800 students die from alcohol-related causes
  • 97,000 campus sexual assaults are linked to alcohol
  • 1 in 4 students report academic consequences of drinking
  • 696,000 students are assaulted by an intoxicated student

Alcohol abuse can destroy relationships, careers and your future. Virtually every organ system in the body is affected by alcohol abuse causing anxiety, depression, memory loss, anemia, nerve damage, liver disease and more. Alcohol overdose can cause vomiting, seizures and death.

If you see someone who may be experiencing an alcohol overdose, call 911 immediately. If you or someone you know has a problem with alcohol abuse there are many resources available.
