Raven: “Why Journalism?”

Sharing is caring!

This post was written by Raven, a DCCCD student blogger and an Mountain View student.

Choosing a major can be a difficult task, especially when there are so many exciting options available! Whether you want to be a biomedical researcher or a comic artist, you can find college classes for your major. Still, that does not make selecting classes any easier. I would like to share why I chose my major and why it is ok, if you are not sure what you would like to do.

I am a journalism major currently attending Mountain View College. There are often misconceptions about what I aspire to do when I tell others about it. When they hear ‘journalism’ they automatically think politics or weather reporting. Often, I hear, “make sure you report the real news” or “you’re too shy and need to be outgoing for that.” Unfortunately, they don’t realize live reporting is just one of the many careers under my major, not the only one.

Journalism was not my first choice, but it was my best choice. At first, I was stuck between Fine Arts and English. I enjoy painting, sketching and analyzing literature which fascinates me. So, why journalism? I have four reasons that I selected journalism:

· It fits my aspiration as a traveler.

· I love writing, especially about social issues and the arts.

· I enjoy hearing people’s stories.

· I want to share stories through print and digital formats to inspire others when they are feeling down.

Of course, there are more! Those are just my top four. Sure, journalism probably is not your preferred major. I didn’t think it was mine, but if you are undecided, you shouldn’t worry. There are plenty of students who are still figuring it out. Sometimes, their major is what they least expect, but most enjoy!
