Navigating college can be confusing — there are lots of moving parts and decisions to make. Luckily, you don’t have to make these decisions alone. You have resources available to you every step of the way. Don’t fret — the colleges of DCCCD are here to help.
What Is Guided Pathways?
Guided Pathways clearly outline specific requirements that tell you which courses to enroll in and identify learning outcomes of each program. One great resource for your college journey is Guided Pathways.
Whether you’re a new or a current student, a guided pathway is a clear, concise map that takes you through each step of your college journey and helps you transition to a four-year school or enter the job market.
What Are My Options For Career Paths?
Guided pathways are available within each of the seven career paths offered at the colleges of DCCCD.
You choose from the following career paths:
- Arts, Humanities, Communications and Design
- Business
- Education
- Health Services
- Industry, Manufacturing and Construction
- Social Sciences and Public Service
- STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)
Let’s say that you select the business career path and you select business management as your guided pathway. You will see a step-by-step guide with courses mapped out for you. This helps you take exactly the classes you need to earn a degree or certificate, transfer to a university or enter the workforce.
What’s the Difference Between a Degree Plan and Guided Pathway?
A degree plan provides a broad overview of an Associate of Arts (AA) or an Associate of Science (AAS) degree, whereas a guided pathway is more specific— it focuses on the specific classes needed to complete a degree or certificate.
Why Do I Need a Guided Pathway?
A guided pathway helps you stay on track with your degree plan (graduate on time to save time and money!). It will also help you set academic goals based on your career interest and develop a plan to reach your goals. Finally, a guided pathway will create a smooth transition to a university or into the workforce.
What Are the Next Steps?
- Meet with a pathways advisor: Pathway advisors guide and assist you in planning your class schedule. It is important that you meet with your advisor early so that he or she can assist you in selecting the courses that are right for you.
- Meet with a career coach: Career coaches assist you in developing a personal career pathway so you have a smooth transition into a university, training or employment.
- Meet with a navigator: Navigators can offer you guidance and referrals to college and community resources.
- Heads Up: If a guided pathway is not listed for a specific program, please contact your advisor for assistance. Not every program has a guided pathway yet.
Am I Required to Use a Guided Pathway?
To help students save time and money at college, guided pathways are highly recommended but it is not required that you declare a guided pathway or meet with a pathways advisor.
