Daphne: “Be Your Own Advocate”

This post was written by Daphne Johnson, a Dallas Colleges Online student working her way through prerequisites before she transfers into a bachelor’s of science in nursing program.

It is not easy to make changes to your life. Change can be hard. Change can be scary. And sometimes change can be lonely, if you don’t have any support. Add to that, if you are facing some other kinds of stressors in your life, making a change or starting something new can feel like an impossible task.

My advice to you is to seek out help and inform yourself on the many resources that are available to you as you are going through the college experience at DCCCD. Create your own support network by reaching out to your teachers, reaching out to your fellow students and utilizing on-campus and online resources. All of these resources are available to every student, whether they go to class on campus or if they are taking online courses. Make a point to ask questions, go to your college’s tutoring center or set up study sessions with classmates. Utilize the many student services available to you. The DCCCD has much to offer to all the many kinds of students that go through their system and their goal is to help each student be successful.

And remember: you must be your own advocate. So, that means stick to your guns, reach for your goals and if you need help: ask for it. You must advance your own cause. And the best way to get started with this is to find out what services your college has to help you on your way.

Good luck to you on your journey!
