Thinking about learning how to write code? These six inspirational quotes will help you begin your journey. They’re from the master programmer of the final frontier: Spock.
1. “Logic is the beginning of wisdom.”
As a Vulcan, Spock lives by logic and reason. These traits influence his daily actions on the starship Enterprise, his diet, his relationships and the advice he gives Captain Kirk.
Spock’s love for logic and reason is also key for programmers who problem-solve daily. Programmers must use their analytical turn of mind to tell a computer what operation to perform. They then give computers these instructions in a programming language – HTML, C++, Java, etc.
2. “Computers make excellent and efficient servants, but I have no wish to serve under them.”
When it comes to computers, Spock likes to be in charge and coding allows him to sit in the driver’s seat.
Spock’s training began at a young age when his dad gave Spock his first instruction in computers. Spock’s continued training makes him an expert programmer. He is able to code in hundreds of languages (even alien languages) and hack enemy databases to protect and serve his crew.
3. “Fascinating.”
When problems come his way, Spock is more likely to be intrigued than troubled. Maintaining his calm, no-sweat composure, Spock uses logic to define the problem, plan for a solution and express that solution in a programming language.
This fascination with problem-solving is common among programmers. Many love puzzles and riddles. They often have a natural desire to fix what is broken or find out how things work.

4. “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”
Today there is a huge shortage of skilled programmers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of software developers is projected to grow 17 percent from 2014 to 2024, and employment of web developers is projected to grow 27 percent from 2014 to 2024 – both much faster than the average for all occupations.
Programmers and developers are essential for today’s technology-focused culture and economy. Just look around you and you’ll see computers and mobile devices everywhere. We may not be cruising with Spock through the final frontier, but we definitely are living and working in a 21st century world.
5. “Live long and prosper.”
While programming won’t affect your life expectancy, it can definitely affect your bank account. Financial prosperity can be common among programmers, who often earn great salaries for their coding skills.
In Dallas the average annual wages for people who can code are high: $64,970 for web developers, $79,530 for computer programmers and $98,260 for software developers.
6. “Do or do not. There is no try.”
Okay, you’re right. Spock didn’t say this one. It was another of our intergalactic friends, Yoda. But it’s probably safe to say Spock would agree! If you set your mind to something and are determined, you are much more likely to succeed. As Captain Kirk said, “[…] the greatest danger facing us is ourselves, an irrational fear of the unknown. But there’s no such thing as the unknown – only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood.” Don’t let the unknown scare you – learn to code today!
