What Can a Management Degree Do For You?

Last updated on October 9, 2019

Being a leader doesn’t always come naturally. Some of us are naturally inclined to become leaders and managers, sure, but the rest of us have to work at it. Luckily, many of these practical business skills can be studied, taught and improved on over time… and that’s where Dallas Community Colleges come in!

Our management training programs can help you get started when it comes to basic business principles, business and professional communication, human resource management, problem solving and decision making… you get the idea.

Is a Management Degree Useful?

The short answer: yes! The longer answer: the skills you learn in DCCCD’s Management program can come in handy in a variety of work situations. Management training involves the development of things like:

  • analytical and critical thinking skills
  • the ability to make decisions based on rational thinking
  • oral and written communication skills
  • the time management skills required to manage people, projects and resources
  • initiative and self-reliance
  • the ability to research, interpret and use business and financial data

Many of these are highly useful skills to carry around with you — regardless of whether or not you’re directly involved in a supervisory role at work.

What Kind of Jobs Can You Get With a Management Degree or Certificate?

Management skills translate for wide variety of industries, but some will require more education than others. If you’re unsure how much time you want to spend studying management, it might be a good idea to look into one of the following certificates:

The supervisor certificate will prepare you for an entry-level supervisory position in business. The management certificate is designed to enable you to function in leadership and decision-making positions. Next up, the Leadership Marketable Skills certificate is designed with an emphasis on developing leadership skills in a business environment with on-the-job training. Finally, the Retail Management certificate emphasizes the principles of managing and leading in a retail industry environment.

Worth noting: If you decide to continue your studies after earning one of these certificates, you should know that all of the courses in these programs, with the exception of some of the courses for the Retail Management certificate, are applicable to the associate degree option.

(Something else to think about: If you have a job already, a shiny new certificate on your resume might be just the thing to help you get promoted!)

Earn an Associate Degree in Management

The Management Associate of Applied Science degree is a little more intensive compared to the certificates, and it will take about two years to complete as a full-time student. One unique quality about the program at DCCCD is the Management Cooperative Education classes. These classes allow students to earn up to 12 credit hours by applying the concepts they learn to their current jobs. This way, you’re not just learning about theory — you’re applying these principles directly to your work! This real world application of the program benefits both aspiring managers and students who already have managerial experience.
