“Something New” by DCCCD Student Blogger Linda Simington

This post is written by Linda Simington, a DCCCD student blogger and former Eastfield College student.

Well hello! I missed you over the summer. Hope you had a great time whether it was relaxing, having fun in the sun, or taking advantage of summer classes. Things are moving right along for me as I begin the next phase of my academic plan – working towards my bachelor’s degree. And wouldn’t you know it, Eastfield continues to pave the way for me in my quest.

Through careful planning and savvy collaboration, Eastfield has formed a partnership and is now host to a branch of Columbia College right here on the Eastfield campus! I was also happy to learn that Columbia College (based in Columbia, Missouri) is regionally accredited. How cool is that? The buzz is out and you can learn more about the partnership here in an archive of the Dallas Morning News.

Even so, as with most new ventures, unfamiliar territory can at times brew anxieties as we wind our way through the ins and the outs of new school processes. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe, but that was no exception for me. I was chock-full of questions; however, advisors Beverly Morris and Ashley Carter worked to quell what qualms I possessed and made the transition smooth and painless for me. Like butta.

Additionally, I had the pleasure of meeting Columbia College’s director for the Mesquite, TX location, Dr. Constance Bennett. Dr. Bennett was most gracious in welcoming me to my new school, as well as extending her support and assistance should I need it. Ron Ward (whom I have not formally met), is the campus’s new enrollment manager.

If this has piqued your interest, (especially recent Eastfield grads or those who soon will graduate), dash over and speak with a Columbia College staff member. They are awfully nice. As I said, their office is located on the Eastfield campus, building W, Room 136. Or if you don’t have the time right now, you can pick up a brochure there or give them a call. Their on-campus number is (972) 391-1010. I know inquisitive minds are busy calculating how and why this partnership may be an ideal option for them. Hmmm.

Columbia College was a good option for me for a couple reasons:

  1. The first was that they offer a bachelor of general studies degree (among others) whereas I can also continue with human services classes.
  2. The second reason was the location;  you can’t beat it. It is sooo convenient for me. I was kind of not really liking the idea of having to travel across town in pursuit of my educational goals… okay, I was dreading it. As it turns out, I don’t have to! You know the saying, “you usually find what you’re looking for right in your own backyard.”

As far as my needs are concerned, things have worked out beautifully. Ahh yea, hats off to my alma mater for a job well done!
