Richland College’s men’s basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit to win the 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national championship. The Thunderducks have now won three national titles in their history.
Richland defeated defending national champion Rock Valley (Ill.) 67-64 on Saturday in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. Sophomore forward Kierre Moore scored a game-high 20 points, making 7-for-7 shots from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Moore added four rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.
Three other Thunderducks posted double figures in scoring. Sophomore guard Brandon Woods totaled 15 points – connecting on 6-of-9 shots from the field – and picked away three steals. Fellow second-guard Trey Hall scored 11 points, adding a team-high five assists and six rebounds. Sophomore center Ishmael Donzo had 12 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds.
Moore was named tournament MVP. Hall was recognized as well, receiving all-tournament honors.
Richland previously won national titles in 1999 and 2009. The Thunderducks’ final record this season was 27 wins and three losses.
